Create a fun Christmas craft with your toddler while encouraging language skills and conversation practice. This Christmas tree art project makes a fun holiday decoration.

The Christmas season is a wonderful time to spend one-on-one time with your toddler and teach him important basic skills in a way that is fun and exciting for. This fun Christmas Tree craft helps toddlers practice their listening skills and language skills as they use descriptive adjectives to explain where they want to place decorations on the Christmas tree craft.

Supplies Needed for Crazy Christmas Tree Craft

  • Large sheet of green butcher paper
  • Foam shapes
  • Stickers
  • Feathers
  • Buttons
  • Picture cards – You can make picture cards yourself by cutting small pictures
  • Assorted craft supplies. Use words that are familiar to your toddler but may be slightly difficult for him to say. This will encourage your toddler to practice sounds that he may be having trouble with.

How to Create a Crazy Christmas Tree Craft

Draw an outline of a Christmas tree on a piece of green butcher paper. Ask your toddler if he wants to help you decorate the tree. Explain to your toddler that he has to use his words to talk about what he is doing as you decorate the tree.

Offer Choices – Hold up two options for decorations and ask your toddler to tell you which choice he prefers. Encourage your toddler to use as many words as possible. If he points to an object instead of talking ask him a question about his choice such as, “Do you want the blue sticker?”

Use Descriptive Language – Once you have a few decorations on the tree you can use them to describe the different areas of the Christmas tree. After your toddler chooses a decoration ask him where he wants to put it on the tree. Encourage your toddler to use descriptive language by asking if he wants to put his decoration at the top of the tree or at the bottom of the tree, on a branch or on the trunk. You can use objects on the tree to describe location such as, “Do you want to put the feather next to the button or underneath the circle?” Ask your preschooler if the decoration that he wants to use is big or small.

This is an excellent language activity for toddlers because they are encouraged to use their words in a safe and secure environment. The relaxed style of this activity helps toddlers to have fun while practicing valuable conversation skills and allows them to create a wonderful crazy Christmas tree craft that they can display proudly throughout the holiday season.
